Impending Storm

We've had some storms blow thru this week and I was fortunate to be able get a shot of this formation as it approached.  I used Spot Metering on the brightest part so as to not blow the highlights.

A few weeks ago I was asked to take photos at a backyard party and wondered which lens to mount on the camera.  Should I be "safe" and take a zoom lens or "chance it" and take a prime or be super cautious and take one or more of each?  Which camera to take was the easy part.  It would be the Nikon D600.  Easy because I've only got two to choose from - one Full Frame (FF) and one APS-C - and I knew I wanted a FF sensor for this outing.
